Renewing the Open Space System of Northern Salgótarján.
NORTHERN SALGÓTARJÁN
LOCATION: Salgotarjan, Hungary
YEAR OF IMPLEMENTATION: 2016-ongoing
AREA OF THE SITE: 34 Ha
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Open Space System and Green Infrastructure
Design Approach.
By establishing green corridors with walking and cycling opportunities, we intend to create an organic fabric of green open spaces, following the same design principles, narrative and design language throughout the whole project site. Upon completion, the northern reaches of the city will provide the broader community with new, aesthetic and sustainable green spaces.
Masterplan of the Open Space System of Northern Salgótarján
Salgotarjan is a regional centre in Northern Hungary, nested in the foothills of the Northern Mountain Range. The city has a rich cultural and natural heritage, but has been struggling after losing its industrial importance after the collapse of the iron curtain. The coal mines have been permanently closed, and there was little focus on the open space system. The focal and starting point of our project was the community-lead renewal of Beszterce Square, which was completed in 2018. The all-new open spaces feature an array of activities for all age groups, including new playgrounds, exercise areas and open spaces for community events. The natural and cultural heritage is featured in the panels of the paving and retaining, as well as an urban geology trail.
