Bird Park is a forested area in the hills surrounding Northern Salgótarján in Hungary. The site is well connected to Beszterce by public transport, and is an attractive destination for locals and visitors alike. The neighbouring Geopark has a popular playground and café, and the site is busy during the summer months due to the proximity of tramping tracks and forest walks.
The goal of the project is to provide a safe heaven for the rich avifauna of the hills, and to create a platform for nature-lovers and birdwatchers to interact with the birds and their forest habitat. The site has a creek and a man-made pond, but the infrastructure, pavements and the condition of the tracks and green areas is poor. Our concept design builds on these natural features, the core idea of the masterplan is to provide observation opportunities while preserving and enhancing the beech forest of the site.

The design is built on a series of observation platforms and tracks in the forest, along the creek and overlooking the pond, catering for small family groups and larger student groups exploring the area. Education is an important aspect of the design brief, information boards and artistic installations help identifying the bird species and wildlife present at the park. The mosaic of riparian and forest habitats are being restored by introducing characteristic plant species, the large planted areas provide shelter and food sources for flora and fauna. The project is currently under construction, images and information will be uploaded as construction progresses.
